Brother Scanner Drivers for Windows Server

Modded drivers to allow scanning MFC-J4710DW on a Windows Server 2008 R2

Officially only printing is supported for the Windows Server platform for the MFC-J4710DW and similar printers. On the download page you are advised that the full software suite functionality is not available. If you attempt to install the full software you will receive OS not supported error, trying to force install the drivers also fails.

But with an iron will, a weekends worth of time, and some luck I was able to modify later model's drivers and successfully install the scanner drivers.

Unfortunately ControlCenter4 seems to be hardcoded not to function in a Server environment, but as an alternative I found NAPS2 which works wonderfully with the 'scan' button events - please donate to the developer!

You can find the modified driver at this link. Please note 'Desktop Experience' feature is required or driver will fail with Error: No INF AddService directives contained the flag SPSVCINST_ASSOCSERVICE in the log file.

Also note the .inf modification does change the driver's signature which windows will warn you about and you must overwrite - install the driver by right clicking the device and choosing 'Update Driver Software... > Browse my computer for driver software > Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer'.

The approach should work for any other MFC models that lack Windows Server support, so based on demand in the comments section I will update this post and as always feel free to follow me @danielsokolows.

How to child proof a fireplace

DIY - Do it yourself fireplace child guard Our wonderful 8.5 month old Sofia has become a crawling race car with an untamed thirst for exploration. And so with the cold nights approaching we needed to child proof the fireplace. This however proved to be more difficult than would reasonably expect, I've checked the local Toys "R" Us, Walmart, and even a Canadian Tire with no success for a ready to use product. Internet search was more fruitful and returned a few online stores one could order from, however in all honestly they didn't look too sturdy to me. So I build my own relatively quickly and inexpensively. Materials needed is a privacy plastic lattice - the smallest hole pattern - a few screws and anchors; tools needed are a drill, and a handsaw if you don't have the lattice cut at the store - that’s it. The construction consits of screwing the lattice into the wall and the final product is easiest explained through following pictures. Feel free to +1 this po…
